CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait – The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division and the USO co-sponsored the Buehring Olympics and Wellness Expo Oct. 31 at Camp Buehring. The event, the first of its kind, featured eight sports tournaments, 11 medical awareness booths and a social gathering that included a barbecue and a disc jockey.

The event was part of the brigade’s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program designed to increase the physical and psychological health, resilience and performance of Soldiers.

First Lt. Thad Nelson, medical officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st ABCT, said the brigade wanted to get as many Soldiers outside as possible to participate in the Buehring Olympics and Wellness expo.

“This is a culminating event for our Ready and Resilient program, which touches the social, emotional and physical aspects of Soldiers’ fitness,” Nelson said. “We are midway through our nine-month deployment and created this event to pick up the morale of our Soldiers.”

Tiffany Banks, manager, Camp Buehring USO, said the goal of the event was to encourage esprit de corps throughout the camp, and give service members and civilians an opportunity to relax and have fun.

“We donated more than $5,000 in prizes to the winners of the events,” Banks said. “It was a great opportunity to provide Soldiers with information to keep them healthy and safe.”

Activities at the event addressed physical, emotional and social needs, Nelson said, which ensured everyone in the brigade had the opportunity to participate in something and have fun.

The event also was a way for the brigade’s medical providers to address Soldiers’ overall health.

“Many Soldiers are afraid to go to sick call due to being looked at as weak,” said Spc. Brenna Lacaillade, combat medic, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div. “The wellness expo was the perfect opportunity for us to treat Soldiers who would normally never come to sick call.”

The expo featured flu vaccinations, hypertension screening, pre-rehabilitation which showed Soldiers how to avoid injuries, tobacco education, proper nutrition, dental hygiene and supplement safety.

“We know Soldiers are using supplements, and (we) want to educate them on the negative impact some supplements can have on their body,” said Capt. Brian Patton, physician assistant, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div.

Health care officials wanted to bring awareness to supplement ingredients and help Soldiers know what to look for, Patton said, adding there are a lot of things in supplements that can cause damage to a person’s liver and kidneys.

“This was a great event,” said Sgt. Doralene Griffin-Wiggins, patient administration noncommissioned officer, 101st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div. “It was an opportunity to have fun and get information from medical providers that I haven’t seen since we arrived.”

Col. John Reynolds III, 1st ABCT commander, praised the USO and Camp Buehring for their support of the brigade’s Ready and Resilient line of operation and promised to provide more morale-boosting opportunities for Soldiers.
