MANHATTAN, Kan. — Capt. Steven Dray, a trial counsel for 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, taught a class on the Army legal system Nov. 13 to Kansas State University ROTC cadets. The legal class focused on the Uniformed Code of Military Justice and its importance in today’s Army.

On average, Army ROTC students at K-State receive about 24 hours of training and military lectures per week from various Fort Riley company and field grade officers from different job specialties throughout the Army.

“Not only was the lesson informative, we had a relaxed professional discussion about the Army’s legal system that lot of people don’t completely understand,” said Cadet Brian Bircher, a senior in pre-law who is set to commission in May.

The partnership between 4th IBCT and K-State provides ROTC students the opportunity to get hands-on training with various units across Fort Riley. The “Dragon” brigade offers many different training opportunities to the K-State Army ROTC program, including medical training, confidence courses and simulated battlefield training, as well as lectures from officers who can prepare them for service as lieutenants.

“The relationship and real-world experience we get from 4th IBCT is what makes the partnership so special,” Bircher, a Lansing, Kansas, native, said. “I got a feel for what to expect when I join the Army.”

Cadet Andrew Stoafer, a prior-service Reservist who graduated high school in Leavenworth, Kansas, said that his class has interacted with the Dragon brigade numerous times in the past few months to see what their day-to-day training is like.
“The training aspects are limitless,” he said. “I think 4th IBCT and Fort Riley provide us with the best training compared to any other ROTC programs across the nation.”
