FORT BENNING, Ga. - The Soldiers assigned to 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division hosted and conducted a squad competition at Fort Benning, Georgia, Nov. 4-6, 2014. Each company was represented by a squad of nine Soldiers, along with Soldiers assigned to the Royal Canadian Army. The competition had a total of 35 squads.

"The Canadian Army had two squads participating in the Sledgehammer Competition," said Sgt. Sebastien Nadon, a Canadian Infantrymen assigned to the Royal Canadian Army. "I received an email from a warrant officer saying 'Congratulations, you are going to the states to compete in the Sledgehammer Competition'."

The Canadian Soldiers arrived late Saturday night.

Rather than being “voluntold” two months ago, Spc. Shawn Hedrick, a track vehicle repairer, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd ABCT, 3rd ID, was asked by a noncommissioned officer “if he wanted to do something rough and tough."

“I knew I had to prove myself and be an asset to the squad," he added.

"We didn't know what the competitions included, so we had to train on way we thought it might be," said Hedrick.

It wasn't until they received the brief that they knew what obstacles they had to complete, he said.

Hedrick said, "Land navigation wasn't difficult, it was the obstacle course. The obstacle that you had to walk over, that was almost as tall as I am. I had to leap over them, and hope for the best."

"Land navigation was not that difficult for the Canadian Army either; it was evacuating a casualty that they found to be challenging for the squad," said Nadon.

Nadon said they received a really warm welcome, and basically came to the states to have fun with no expectations.

"My goal is to take some of the things I've learned from the competition back to our Soldiers and try to do a competition," Nadon.

He said, “The water confidence course is something that they do not have in Canada. I really enjoyed the water and confidence course."

Nadon said, "Just giving the opportunity to come to the states and interact with American Soldiers was really awesome.”

“The Soldiers here are very friendly and helpful,” he added.

The competition ended with an award ceremony. The Canadian Army received Army Achievement Medals for placing first with 780 points. Company B, 2nd Battalion 69th Army Regiment, 3rd ABCT, 3rd ID received an AAM for placing second with 772 points. Last, but not least, Company A, 2nd Bn. 69th Armored Regt. received a Certificate of Appreciation for placing third with 730 points.
