TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Recently 3/2 visited Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms to conduct an Integrated Training Exercise with other units in an environment which is far different from the terrain they are accustomed to on their home base of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Fuller, who grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, says the Marines around him treat him like any older siblings would. He takes in the knowledge they have to offer and earns his spot among the rest of the platoon.
“Because of my youth they get to be my mentors, so I’m learning from them and, in a way, they’re kind of learning as well from having me there and teaching me,” said Fuller.
Prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps, Fuller had decided on joining the Army, but saw a different side of the military through a Marine friend of his.
“I originally wanted to go in the Army and be a Green Beret, but a friend I met was on a Human Intelligence Exploitation Team (HET). He told me what he did in the Marine Corps and I changed my mind.”
Fuller came straight from the School of Infantry to his current platoon, and has not yet been fully trained as a sniper. He has taken advantage of the opportunity of being assigned to a sniper platoon and is learning on the job before he even receives formal schooling as a sniper.
He’s proud to be a part of his platoon.
“These guys are supposed to be the best in the battalion, and I would say that’s very accurate,” said Fuller. “It’s awesome to work with these guys and be a part of that.”
His assistant team leader, Cpl. Cory Levy said Fuller carries his own weight and is a good addition to the platoon.
“He has that character, he’s another guy to help us out and be there for us. We all add our own little thing to the platoon. Altogether we make a good platoon,” said Levy. “He’s not bringing any less than anyone else, he’s bringing his all.”
Fuller said he is grateful for the tight-knit relationship his platoon has.
“Since there are so few of us in the platoon, we do almost everything together, we work really well together and the leadership is really strong,” said Fuller.
Pfc. Fuller and his platoon will be deploying with a Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force to U.S. Central Command in the coming months. Fuller hopes that during this deployment he will have opportunities to gain valuable experience and employ all the skills he’s learned.
Fuller had a simple answer as to what he looks forward to most during his career with the Corps.
“I just want to fight wars, that’s why I’m here.”
