JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - Even as local northern Virginia communities and neighborhoods hosted traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating Oct. 31, a new tradition was beginning at 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon.

The first-ever Caisson’s Haunted Hayride and Stables drew 526 civilians, Soldiers and service members to the Fort Myer portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall for hayrack rides, candy, arts and crafts and an adult-themed haunted stables.

On Halloween night, 276 guests received the opportunity to meet Caisson horses and take part in autumnal festivities, and last week’s party goers numbered 250 on Nov. 1.

Assisting the Caisson Platoon were the United Services Organization and JBM-HH’s Army Community Service office, donated supplies and offered volunteers for the event.

“We had an excellent turnout last night (Friday night),” said Caisson Platoon Leader Capt. Devin Osburn. “The Soldiers and civilian volunteers came together (and) put this plan in place. We had Soldiers volunteer their personal time which helped out tremendously.”

A total of 26 Caisson Platoon Soldiers and six civilians volunteered part of their weekends to assist in the hayrack rides, which doubled as a rolling scavenger hunt, and aiding and answering questions.

“These Soldiers like to give back to the community, and that is part of their jobs day in and day out,” said Osborn. “They’re not afraid to work a little extra to make sure someone has a great time.”

Naturally, kids were immediately drawn to the stable byways to meet-and-greet with the horses, but other parts of the Halloween bash also drew much attention.

“The hayride, most of the kids love it,” said Osburn. “Friday night, I heard one little girl say that this is the best Halloween she’s ever had. That makes us feel pretty good.”

According to Staff Sgt. John S. Ford of Caisson Operations, the platoon is optimistic a second annual hayride and haunted stables event will take place in the autumn of 2015.
