3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Soldiers assigned to Delta Company, 29th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, conducted a multi-functional team (MFT) lane training Oct. 23 here.

Delta Company, the brigade's only military intelligence company (MICO) held a company Field Training Exercise (FTX), for its MFTs Platoon.

This FTX was the platoons first chance to tactically test and validate its combined human intelligence (HUMINT) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) capabilities.

This training was conducted at the improvised explosive device (IED) lanes and culminated in a joint raid with a platoon from Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion 35th Infantry Regiment Battalion. The infantry platoon was tasked with capturing a high value target (HVT).

The MFT conducted tactical questioning (TQ), a battlefield interrogation of the HVT, tactical site exploitation (TSE), essentially searching for usable intelligence on the objective and limited SIGINT practices during the joint raid.

“Because the MFT concept is so new to the brigade, this exercise was the first time that the platoon came together to exercise joint MFT tasks, not just HUMINT or SIGINT tasks,” said 1st Lt. Lauren Kobor, MFT Platoon leader, Delta Company, 29th EN, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma. “This was an opportunity for the entire platoon, from Soldier to platoon, to come together to figure out how to properly implement MFT tasks, such as tactical site exploitation, and HUMINT and SIGINT tasks in an MFT missions.”

MFTs officially stood up in the Bronco Brigade with a company manning authorization (MTOE) change in October 2014. The MFTs are a very new concept within the brigade, and this training event was the first opportunity for the MFTs to tactically train through integrating with a maneuver unit on their mission set.

Spc. Deonte Jackson, a team member assigned to Delta Company, 29th EN, of Warner Robins, Georgia, said, “This exercise was to help develop a better understanding of how a MFT works and to also build morale with other team members.”

The MFTs are a brigade enabler and are designed to be pushed down to the maneuver battalions during operations. They provide instant intelligence support to the infantryman, as they provide both collection and analysis capabilities that a normal infantry unit does not possess.

“The teams conducted cross-training and practical exercises, which lead to a culminating event with 2-35 IN,” said Sgt. Robert Compton, Delta Company, 29th EN BN, a native of East Palestine, Ohio. “The teams were expected to conduct TSE, TQ and SIGINT related tasks in a proficient manor.”

MFTs consist of seven personnel, with a combined HUMINT and SIGINT capability.

Kobor stated, “The teams can operate independently or together for greater collection, exploitation and production of intelligence.”

MFTs are a very new concept within the Bronco Brigade. MFTs are an expeditionary asset that supports the intelligence war fighting function for the brigade. They will be employed for future battalions, brigades and division exercises, culminating in Joint Readiness Training Center rotation in May.

“The MFTs, although only together for less than a month, are incredibly professional, technically and tactically proficient, and lethal,” said Kobor. “They will be an asset to anyone they are attached to.”
