BREMERTON, Wash. – Sailors aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) celebrated the grand re-opening of the ship’s store, commonly called ‘The Mall’, with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, Oct. 24.
“I can tell that a lot of hard work and effort went into renovating the ship’s store,” said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Chanette Purser-Smith, from Raleigh, N.C. “The new ship’s store has a very welcoming appearance, a wide variety of items and gives you a sense of not being on the ship. It is just like going into any little shop out in town.”
A heritage wall in tribute to the ship’s namesake, Mississippi Senator John C. Stennis, was added to the ship’s store along with several other upgrades.
“Last deployment we were able to raise enough money through our sales in the store to buy new equipment such as touch screen card readers, new computer software and updated shelving units,” said Ship’s Serviceman 2nd Class Galen Dornbusch, from San Antonio. “The new software and card readers will mean fewer transaction errors, which will save both the ship and Sailors money in the long run.”
The ship’s store sells health and comfort products such as hygiene items, comfort foods and basic uniform components.
“We try to carry plenty of items that can be eaten as meal replacement when you miss chow such as tuna lunch kits, can soups and chili,” said Dornbusch.
Items available in the store are subject to change based on the feedback supply receives from Sailors.
“If there is something you want us to start carrying we highly encourage Sailors to leave comments in the suggestion box located outside the store,” said Dornbusch. “We try to carry items Sailors want to buy because it makes their life just a little easier when out to sea.”
Stennis is currently undergoing a Docking Planned Incremental Availability maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
