MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. - The 5th Security Forces Squadron has assembled their team and started training for the Global Strike Challenge taking place at Camp Guernsey, Wyoming, from Sept. 22 to 25.

Three rigorous and physically demanding tryouts were held to narrow 12 hopeful Airmen down to six prepared, capable and motivated team members, said 1st Lt. Richard Odom, 5th Security Forces Squadron officer in charge of logistics.

“Tryouts were physically intense and we had to complete a lot of Army-style PT that we weren’t used to,” said Airman 1st Class Hayden Thomas, 5th SFS response force member. “I really enjoyed the challenge though.”

The 5th SFS team will start every training day with an intense physical training session at the McAdoo Sports and Fitness Center. Other preparations for the contest will take place at the security forces training center in the cage classroom for instruction, and shoot house for tactics practice. The group will also train for mounted patrols, dismounted patrols, patrol map work and area defense at various locations on base.

“Global Strike Challenge consists of three different challenges,” Odom said. “The first is a firing competition, then a five to ten kilometer obstacle course, and finally a test of small unit tactics and patrol.”

The team will log long hours, practicing combat arms and training maintenance in preparation for the first phase of the competition, Odom said. This is in addition to PT and patrol practice to set them up for success in parts two and three.

“We have a very diverse team and that gives us an edge,” said Odom. “I know that we’re going to be able to annihilate our competition at the Global Strike Challenge and bring Minot home the win.”

The 5th Security Forces Squadron Global Strike Challenge team members are:

    • 1st Lt. Richard Odom, 5th SFS officer in charge of logistics.
    • Staff Sgt. Rodrique Welton, fire team leader
    • Senior Airman Kevin Swen, confinement guard
    • Senior Airman Brandon Lepkowski, central security controller
    • Airman 1st Class Michael Clayton, response force member
    • Airman 1st Class Hayden Thomas, response force member
