AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar – Top Notch Brigade senior warrant officer adviser Chief Warrant Officer 4 Clayton J. Doane held a fellowship luncheon and conducted Warrant Officer Professional Development (WOPD) on Promotion Selection Board preparation for warrant officers within the brigade August 12.

The events coincided with the Warrant Officer 96th Anniversary Celebration Week of festivities and events. Warrant Officers were given an opportunity to meet, greet, and network, while maintaining the high level of camaraderie within the prestigious warrant officer corps.

Doane started the WOPD explaining the significance of enhancing professional development and career management.

“The success of a warrant officer will ultimately depend on that warrant officer’s ownership of their career,” stated CW4 Doane, as he went into FY14 promotion selection board analysis and board preparation tips and tools.

The areas of emphasis were evaluations, assignments, officer records brief (ORB) maintenance, DA photo appearance, and education. Doane also explained that when looking at officer evaluations, performance in a given job is more important than the specific assignment. But experience through progressive assignments and training will ensure that the right talent is being used in the appropriate positions so that individuals gain experience. This approach will create broadening job opportunities as allowing each warrant officer to develop his or her skills.

Doane reiterated that the ORB gives the board a snapshot of that warrant officer through assignment history, education, overseas, duty and awards. Consistency and data accuracy throughout the records brief is very important. The DA photo gives the board a look at your overall appearance. Do you look fit? Do your awards match your records? How old is your photo? He also stated that the board looks at both civilian and military education.

“Having the minimum education to be promoted should not be the standard. Warrant Officers must look towards there next assignment and how they can improve their standing among their peers.”

Doane concluded the WOPD with group discussion on the promotion selection board and offered one on one records review and career management guidance for any Warrant Officers that were interested.

For Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joaquin Montes, maintenance chief, Top Notch Brigade, the WOPD was very informational.

The class was “a good breakdown of a warrant officer's record,” stated Montes. “Chief Doane gave an excellent overview of what's what of the promotion and selection process. The OPD is a valuable tool during a board preparation and helps to grasp a thorough understanding of the entire process, board schedule, and types of the boards.”

Through professional development classes like this, the Top Notch Brigade ensures that the Army retains the best suited Soldiers for the job.
