OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Lance Cpl. John A. Bates, a Marine Corps officer candidate, is slated to receive the Commandant’s Trophy Tuesday Oct. 11, at the University of Oklahoma.
Bates, an Oklahoma City native, is being bestowed with the highest officer-candidate honor, because of his exceptional academic performance, physical fitness, and demonstration of leadership in Officer Candidate School. He attended Officer Candidates School from July 2014 – August 2014, where he finished as the company honor graduate.
Marine Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA is the first proving ground for future Marine officers. The mission of OCS is to train, screen and evaluate candidates, who must demonstrate a high level of leadership potential and commitment to success in order to earn a commission.
Bates enlisted in the Marines in July 2012 as a tow gunner and is currently a reservist with the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma Tow Platoon. He contracted to hopefully become an infantry officer in January 2014.
For more information about the honor please contact Capt. Spencer Marsinek, Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer, at 405-306-7645.
