PORTSMOUTH, Va. - More than 60 service members participated in the 14th Annual Bayside Harley-Davidson’s Fleet Ride, Oct. 4.

A group of riders departed the Bayside Harley-Davidson dealership for a 10-mile ride, escorted by the Portsmouth Sheriff's Department Motorcycle Unit and City of Portsmouth Motor Squad through Portsmouth’s Mid-Town Tunnel. Then looping back through the tunnel, the ride ended back at the bayside dealership.

“When we started the ride back in 2001, it was our way of thanking the community for its support,” said Kevin Johnson, general manager of Bayside Harley-Davidson. “Being retired Navy, along with most of the community, it was only right that we honor those in the armed forces.”

The Fleet Ride, also called “Rumble through the Tunnel”, was started by Bayside Harley-Davidson’s owner Maurice Slaughter and retired Navy employees, who wanted to show their appreciation to the local military community by becoming one of the largest donators to Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).

“This ride is a great thing to be a part of,” said retired Army Staff. Sgt. Frank Irineo, a Fleet Ride participant. “If the honoring of those still serving this great country isn’t a good enough reason to participate, the camaraderie between those who ride should be.”

With the registration proceeds donated to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, the ride not only gave military and non-military riders an opportunity to do something they loved, but a chance to give back to those in need.

“The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society has helped many of my shipmates in the past,” said Electronics Technician 3rd Class Amber Applepape, a Rumble in the Tunnel participant. “It is one of those support factors in the Navy that gives fallen shipmates a helping hand and I’m proud to be here today, giving my support to those who may need it one day.

The NMCRS is a private non-profit charitable organization that provides financial, educational and other assistance to members of the naval services and eligible family members and survivors when in need.

“The Hampton Roads area is a Navy community and those in this community are keenly aware of the sacrifices made every day by our military families,” said Johnson. “We are fortunate to have organizations like the NMCRS in the area to help these families.”

For more information about the NMCRS or to make a donation, contact your local NMCRS Coordinator or visit www.nmcrs.org.
