FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. - Sailors assigned to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) participated in a Suicide Awareness Run Sept. 26 held at Fort Meade, Maryland.
The event was coordinated as part of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and is intended to increase awareness and prevention efforts.
"Our goal was to raise awareness of the number of suicides in the Navy this year," said Lt. James Golliday, a FCC/C10F suicide prevention coordinator. "It also serves as a good way to wrap-up Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in a positive way."
FCC/C10F Sailors teamed-up to run a total of 50 laps, or 12.5 miles, one lap for each Navy suicide committed this year.
"We want Sailors to know that we are here to help," said Golliday. "Also, they can talk to us and get the help they need without negatively impacting their careers."
The Navy is taking this month to emphasize its "Act, Care, Treat" (ACT) training tool, which is designed to raise awareness of suicide warning signs and encourages people to intervene with those at risk.
"I hope every Sailor knows they mean something to the Navy," said Chief Religious Program Specialist Michelle Guzman-Roberts, a FCC/C10F participant. "If you are having trouble, reach out to somebody. It is OK to ask for help."
