AUSTIN, Texas - Marine judge advocates from multiple units joined judge advocates from other branches of the armed forces in attending the 18th Annual National Latina/o Law Student Association (NLLSA) Conference at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, Sept. 17-20, 2014.
The judge advocates served as proof sources for the military and shared their collective knowledge and expertise with members of the association by participating in moot court competitions as judges, holding question and answer panels and sharing information during the career fair portion of the conference.
This was the first year the Marines partnered with the association for the convention and according to George Gomez, the attorney general for the NLLSA and a graduate of North Illinois University College of Law, having the Marines at the event provided a unique perspective for the attendees.
"This year was a very special year, not just for me but for NLLSA, because it was the first year we had the Marines attend the conference,” said Gomez.
“I was very impressed,” he said. They just stick out in a room because of their professional demeanor and their knowledge of the law Gomez added.
The conference was also informative for the Marines that attended said Capt. Vanessa Sigala, a judge advocate who currently serves as the operations officer for Marine Corps Recruiting Station Atlanta.
“I thought the conference was excellent and I am really happy to see the quality of students that were competing in this event,” Sigala said.
Gomez said he was amazed at the impact the Marines can have on a person.
“This is the third year I have attended this conference and I have thought about becoming a judge advocate conference,” said Gomez. “This year I have gained a new perspective on judge advocate service.”
“If I had to pick one branch it would be the Marines … and it only took meeting them one time to say to myself ‘I am really thinking about joining the Marines’ … because I like challenges and like the idea of earning it.”
