JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING - Air Force Capt. Stacie Wrobel spent most of her childhood traveling to different Air Force bases with her dual military parents, so to Wrobel, home truly is where the Air Force sends her.

“My father was an electrician on the B-2 Stealth Bomber so we spent most of my childhood at Edwards Air Force Base in California,” she said. “He retired when I was in elementary school though so I spent middle school and high school in Goddard, Kansas. Those are the important years so I call Kansas home.”

Wrobel said she knew midway through her high school career that she wanted to join the Air Force. She enlisted five days after graduation and served three years as a finance technician. However, she said she felt a calling to the medical field. So she left the Air Force.

“I was a little disheartened that I didn’t get a medical job when I first came in so I completed my enlistment, and got out,” she said. “I went to nursing school and came back in. Initially, I wanted to be a doctor, but I just love the role of the nurse. It’s more hands-on, and they deal with the overall health of the patient.”

Prior to returning to the Air Force, Wrobel worked as a nurse in the private community, but she missed the military so she got back in and is now a registered nurse in the 579th Medical Group Family Health Clinic.

She spends the majority of her day on the phone helping patients. She listens to their symptoms and conducts phone triage. She also assists with prescription refills and referral renewals.

“The Air Force is the community I love,” she said. “Spending time away from it during nursing school made me realize how much I miss it when I’m away from it. It comes with some sacrifices obviously, but it’s a wonderful lifestyle.”
