FORT HOOD, Texas – Members of the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment “Headhunters,” 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division here joined faculty and students of Manor Middle School in Killeen, Texas, for the 9/11 “America Supports You Freedom Walk” ceremony Sept. 11.

Lt. Col. Jason Tussey, Headhunter commander, was the guest speaker at the ceremony, which included a Manor dance ensemble, band and choir performance, and sponsor sign dedication, as this is the first year the Headhunters will sponsor Manor.

The walk has a history of recognizing and remembering those who serve for our freedom in America, said Jennifer Washington, Manor’s principal.

“Freedom comes at a cost,” said Washington. “(Manor) wants to pay tribute to and recognize the Soldiers, veterans and first responders who serve for that freedom.”

Washington said understanding how the military contributes to freedom and the community is important.

“Most students are too young to know what happened, so I want them to know the valuable importance of having a military presence on campus and in the community.”

The presence of military personnel at the school carries an importance that extends beyond the service members’ work as sponsors to their willingness to be role models to the children, said Tussey.

“Words have meaning to children,” said Tussey. “(The Headhunters’) sponsorship is really a partnership that we will build, because our Soldiers stand out in this community.”

Washington said the children are always excited when Soldiers are present.

“Getting to see firsthand from Soldiers discipline and commitment to work allows the children to see why hard work in school is important and the positive possibilities for their future,” Washington added.

“There are a lot of children who want to be Soldiers and will be age-eligible in a few years,” said Tussey. “Some of my Soldiers are young and it wasn’t to long ago they were still in school thinking about their future in the military.”

Washington counts on that youthful connection as a bond to bring a tangible result for her students.

“With the help of the Headhunters,” said Washington, “the school year will be a success.”
