KILLEEN, Texas - Students and faculty of Maxdale Elementary School spent time with Cavalry Troops from 3rd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division during a Freedom Walk Sept. 11 at the school to commemorate Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.

“I was in high school on that day in September, and I determined I would serve to make a difference,” said Sgt. 1st Class Dante Sansom, a combat engineer with 3rd Eng. Bn. Sansom, a Collins, Mississippi, native, said he joined the Army when he was 18 and continues to remember the motto “Freedom is not free” to keep him motivated daily.

He and about 25 more Soldiers from his unit talked with students at the school and later walked with them outside, where patriotic music was played and military vehicles were on display.

Spc. Sarah Walker, an Army intelligence Soldier with 3rd Eng. Bn., spoke with students in the fifth grade on the importance of remembering those who provide for them every day, such as their parents and teachers.

“You should always remember to be a person of character,” Walker said, “and never forget that America is free because of people who serve this great country.”
