KABUL, Afghanistan - Beginning just after dawn on a sunny, comfortable Sept. 11 morning -- much like a morning 13 years ago -- a group of deployed advisors to the Afghan Air Force started the day with a grueling workout. But it wasn't just physical training this morning. Today, it was about honoring those killed by terrorists in 2001, and all the brothers and sisters who have died in the fighting since.
Organized by U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jason Brown, 439th Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron superintendent and security forces advisor to the Afghan Air Force, a group of more than a dozen Airmen gathered at 6:30 a.m. on Forward Operating Base Oqab, Kabul, Afghanistan, to honor the departed victims and warriors by dedicating a repetition or meter for each of the 2,977 killed Sept. 11.
"Today, we did a 9-11 'Never Forget' memorial workout," Brown said. "We had about 15-20 people come out to kind of, dig deep and show a little sacrifice. It consisted of ... one repetition or one meter for every life lost on September 11, 2001."
Performing a list of progressively difficult exercises, including running, box jumps, burpees, pushups and pullups, Brown said the team persevered and made it through.
"Everybody pushed hard today and worked as a team. And showed a little camaraderie in rememberance of 9-11."
The Airmen are deployed to Kabul with NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan and the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing. Their primary role is to advise, train and assist the Afghan Air Force as it increases in capacity to independently operate and meet Afghanistan's needs now and in the future.
