Partnership of the Americas 2014 Provides Opportunity to Collaborate Chilean Military in Humanitarian Efforts

PICHIDANGUI, Chile– The United States Marine Corps and the United States Army began planning humanitarian assistance support with Chilean Marines with a visit to a school here August 14, 2014.

Force Headquarters Group, 4th Civil Affairs Group, Marine Forces Reserve, from Hialeah, Florida, and United States Army 413th Civilian Affairs Battalion from Lubbock, Texas, collaborated with Chilean Marines to renovate facilities at Ercole Bencini school in Pichidangui, Chile, in support of the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief theme of the Partnership of the Americas 2014 exercise.

Marine Lt. Col. John R. Lehmen II, 4th CAG officer in charge, reiterated the benefits of this cooperative civil affairs project as part of the POA exercise.

“Not only will the children be able to enjoy renovated spaces, but more importantly, we are building strong relationships with our South American neighbor, both with its people and its military partners,” said Lehman.

Members of the Chilean Marines will also be supporting the project. Sgt. Maj. Jorge Silva Rojas addressed the impact of the project for the Chilean community.

“Not only does it help the Partnership of the Americas, it also helps the service members participating that are from different countries that are interacting with each other. It helps us to get to know each other better. It also helps because what we want is to be able to reach out to the people-to convey to them that we are here to help them and to feel safe in case of a disaster or any similar situation,” said Rojas.

Representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and the U.S. are participating in POA 2014 from August 11-22, 2014. This exercise is designed to enhance joint and combined interoperability, increase the combined capability to execute amphibious operations, peace support operations and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief missions and further develop strong and lasting relationships the U.S. Marine Corps has established with Partner Nations naval infantries/marine corps.
