ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. - Army Reserve soldiers assigned to the 85th Support Command, in cooperation with the Rolling Meadows Police Department and local first responders, took part in a National Night Out community event on Aug. 5.
“We had about fifteen-hundred to 2,000 people (that showed up) tonight,” explained Sgt. Tom Gadomski, Rolling Meadows Police Department. “We had 50 percent more people this year compared to last year.”
Visitors had a variety of police and fire vehicles to check out. Kids tried on a firefighter air pack, played Simon Says at the main stage or, like Rolling Meadows resident Jeffrey Golota, climbed inside an Army Humvee.
“I would like to go into the Army or Marines,” said Golota after seeing the Army Humvee.
Spectators were even surprised with a rescue helicopter, code-named Air One, that landed in a nearby field allowing the public to get an up-close look and talk with the five-man volunteer crew.
“We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for search and rescue, disaster response, food, water and medical supply missions,” explained Air One crew chief Dave Youngblut.
In addition to visiting with emergency personnel, visitors watched the Jesse White Tumblers perform and visited with a 3-year-old Belgium Malonois police dog, Korne, and her Elk Grove Village police handler.
Perhaps veteran Rolling Meadows police officer Mike Katsenios summed up the evening best.
“I think the best part of National Night out is interacting with the public.”
