NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. - Master Sgt. Tommy Moye, a Quincy, Fla., native, was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal during a ceremony at the Defense Distribution Center Susquehanna in New Cumberland, Pa., August 6.
During his time at the headquarters of the 4th Marine Corps District he served as a member of the training team.
“I started my Marine Corps career August 7, 1991, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.,” said Moye. “After recruit training, I reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. After MCT, I reported to my Military Occupational Specialty school at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., to become a warehouse clerk. Throughout my career as a warehouse clerk, I was stationed at MCB Butler, Okinawa, Japan, MCB Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.”
In 1997 Moye reported to Recruiter’s School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in San Diego, Calif.
After becoming a recruiter, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in 1999 and then became a career recruiter in 2000. While serving as a career recruiter, Moye was promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant.
In 2004, Moye became a recruiter instructor and served at Recruiting Station Richmond from 2004 to 2008. After leaving RS Richmond in 2008, Moye was stationed at RS Baltimore where he served for three years.
Moye was then stationed at the 4MCD headquarters in 2011 and he conducted training and inspections of each RS and Recruiting Sub-Station for the next three years.
“He is the model team member, and is always looking to better himself and the team,” said Master Sgt. Dominick Stinson, a native of Pembroke, N.H., and training team member. “When we traveled around the district, he would always find the best in each RS. We gave him the nickname 'The Mayor' because of that mentality.”
Spending hours together with his fellow training team members allowed Moye to build his own skills as a leader and a Marine.
“The training team meshes pretty well,” said Moye. "I have known the training chief pretty well over the years. Everyone brought things to the table. If I could take a thing from all of them and put it in me it would make me a better Marine and person.”
Moye executed Permanent Change of Station orders to RS Raleigh and will now become the RI for RS Raleigh to ensure the recruiters of RS Raleigh recruit and enlist the most eligible for the U.S. Marine Corps.
