    Massoud Circle Beautification CERP Project

KABUL, Afghanistan - At Kabul's Massoud Circle, Mayor Muhammad Nawandish performed a ribbon cutting ceremony for the ongoing construction of a small park and a drainage system that will help alleviate flooding in the area by redirecting the water to the Kabul River. The Massoud Circle Beautification and Drainage Project is one of four U.S. Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) Commander's Emergency Response Fund projects underway in the Kabul Province. Afghan National Police (ANP) from police District 10 effectively directed heavy traffic around the busy intersection as media stood at the edge of construction workers smoothing wet concrete.

“We had a problem with the drainage during the rain, we had flooding on the roads,” said Nawandish after a meeting on current projects in and around Kabul. “I want to thank the U.S.-FOR-A-leadership, they have supported a lot of projects in Kabul city.”

The park will sits north of Massoud Circle and is scheduled for completion in September. Footpaths through the greenery area will allow pedestrians to safely steer clear of traffic. The CERP project is coordinated with the Kabul Municipality and employs 30 local Afghans as part of the Afghan First initiative.

“Having him come out and validate for the city, that's about as high as you can get,” said Capt. Travis Davis, the Massoud Circle Beautification CERP Project Manager, happy to hear the mayor's endorsement of the park and his speech to the community of its importance.

Other CERP projects include the Gates of Kabul street lighting to support better visibility for travelers, a Bagh-e-Omoni park fence, and Qargha Street lane markings. These initiatives continue the international community's enduring partnership with Afghanistan and are a clear indication of confidence in the Afghan governement to deliver essential services to its people.
