CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a 60-year-old man showing symptoms of stroke Sunday, 11 miles east of Mustang Island State Park.

The captain of the commercial fishing boat Old Frenchman made a distress call to Sector Corpus Christi watchstanders at approximately 6:30 p.m., saying one of his crew members was suffering from what appeared to be symptoms of a stroke. The watchstanders dispatched a crew on an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter to hoist the man from the boat and take him to the hospital. The boatcrew treated the man and stabilized him in the ship’s galley while they waited for the Coast Guard’s help.

The helicopter crew executed a difficult hoist, placing their rescue swimmer down between the fishing boat’s rigging and lines onto the deck. The rescue swimmer stabilized the victim on a backboard with the help of the vessel’s crew. The helicopter crew hoisted him aboard the helicopter and then transported him to Spohn Shoreline hospital.

“I am happy my crew and I were able to assist this mariner in need,” said Lt. Tom Mulder, a pilot aboard the helicopter. “Anytime a serious illness takes place at sea there is a great urgency to bring the person to higher level care as quickly as possible. The teamwork needed between the sector watchstanders, our air crew, and the crew of the Old Frenchman to conduct this difficult operation worked flawlessly today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this man and his family and hope for a full and speedy recovery.”

The man is currently at Spohn Shoreline Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
