International Security Assistance Force has been able to confirm that contrary to some news reports, Taliban extremists are not in control of the Khak-e Sefid district center in Farah province. A combined Afghan security forces/ISAF patrol has swept through the area and has found that the Taliban militants who entered the village, looted and burned down several buildings are no longer there.
"Taliban extremists have used this tactic before," said ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco. "In September 2006, they overran a number of remote district centers, then almost immediately withdrew after claiming that they had achieved a strategic victory. This is propaganda-not militarily significant."
Operations elsewhere in Farah province are on-going and ISAF will not be able to provide details of those operations at this time for operational security.
