85th Support Command
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.- Sgt. 1st Class Delores Porter, senior human resources noncommissioned officer/financial management analyst with the 1st Brigade, Great Lakes Division, 75th Training Command, was honored for her 31 years of service in the U.S. Army during a retirement ceremony, July 12, at the Arlington Heights Reserve Center.
Porter grew up in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s south side and started her Army career on a bet.
“My brother was in the National Guard and bet me that I would not make it in the Army,” explained Porter. “My brother passed away several years ago, but I won the bet and retired.”
Porter handled a variety of assignments during her long career in uniform. She was first assigned to the 478th Personnel Services Company in Chicago.
“We were a close military family and [continue to] gather a few times each year,” said Porter. “My first unit’s cohesive bond inspired me to be part of the United States Army for 31 years.”
Porter also served as a human resources instructor at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
“That’s where I found I had a gift for teaching,” explained Porter.
She worked in the transition assistance program during the first Gulf War and earned her military occupational specialty in finance.
“She was a phenomenal unit administrator,” said Capt. Fred Duttlinger, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment commander, 1BDE/GLD/75th TC. “She took a lot of pride in her uniform. She served the country with honor and distinction.”
So what will the Mount Prospect resident do in retirement?
“I am probably going to get bored because I am used to being so active,” Porter said. “I plan to visit a lot of places and relax.”
Porter, with 25 years on active duty and the remainder as an Army Reserve Soldier, had some words of wisdom for her fellow soldiers as she faces retirement.
“Take care of [your] soldiers and do it with love and dedication, and be proud to wear the uniform,” said Porter.
Col. Raymond Elderd, commander, also wished Porter an enjoyable retirement.
“Personnel services are the backbone of morale for the soldiers. Sgt. 1st Class Porter was the consummate professional,” said Elderd. “I wish you good luck and God speed. It’s my genuine hope that you go forward with great memories of your time in uniform.”
