    QUANTICO, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES

    Story by Capt. Ryan Powell

    Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment

QUANTICO, Va. - Hundreds gathered at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as Willard A. Buhl relinquished his command to Lt. Col. T. Shane Tomko during a change of command ceremony for the Wounded Warrior Regiment here.

The Director of Marine and Family Programs, HQMC Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Brig. Gen. Russell A. Sanborn was the reviewing officer for the ceremony, which was attended by the Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos, several general officers, Marine leaders, regimental staff members, family members and friends of the Regiment.

Buhl served as the commanding officer of the Wounded Warrior Regiment since June 2012. During his tenure at the Regiment, Buhl played a pivotal role expanding the Regiment’s ability to support all wounded, ill and injured Marines and their families regardless of location. He oversaw the implementation of liaison officers at remote locations to facilitate full support for the geographically dispersed active duty, reserve, and veteran wounded, ill and injured Marines. Buhl’s vision for the Regiment focused on ensuring that every wounded, ill and injured Marine as well as their families received the full spectrum of support that they needed to enhance their recoveries.

When expressing his appreciation for Buhl’s dedicated service, characterized by his passion for those he leads, Brig. Gen. Sanborn described him as a strategic thinker and planner whose leadership and guidance have enabled the success of the Regiment. Addressing Buhl, he stated, “You have set the command climate for this Regiment, and for that I thank you.”

After receiving recognition, Buhl thanked those who made his service to the WWR a success. Acknowledging the staff of the Wounded Warrior Regiment, he said, “They come to work every day with one mission – to take care of our people and Keep Faith ….. That isn’t going to change.”

Buhl will move on to serve as the commanding officer of the Special Operations Training Group for the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Tomko comes to the Wounded Warrior Regiment after serving as a G-3 for the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N. C.

In his remarks, Tomko thanked the Commandant of the Marine Corps, “Thank you for this opportunity. This is a calling. This is a good fight and we are going to win because Marines don’t lose.”
