MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Military children can use their imagination to travel to lands where animals, princesses and creatures from fantasy worlds can teach them all about colors, shapes and how to be a good friend during the Harriotte B. Smith Library’s Preschool Storytime aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The event is designed to bring children together and give them the opportunity to learn all while reading entertaining stories.
“I think it’s a good way for children to play and learn with others, and just enjoy the stories we have to share with them,” said Sean Pittman, the reader for the program and library technician with Marine Corps Community Services.
Pittman believes it’s important to reach the hearts and minds of children by reading educational stories to them.
Some of the stories told to the children tell the tale of friendship and happiness, while others delve deep into their imagination, said Pittman.
The event offers a place for children to connect with their peers by learning together and having fun.
“This is the first time bringing my daughter to the event, and I’m very impressed with it so far,” said Staff Sgt. James Williams, a motor transportation chief with Marine Wing Support Squadron 272. “I like how all the children sit together and enjoy their time reading. Reading one story to a group of children can really benefit them, because they’re working off each other, and they’re all experiencing the same emotions throughout the story.”
MCCS offers several Preschool Storytime events at the libraries as well as at the Camp Johnson and Tarawa Terrace Community Centers throughout the week.
“It’s important to reach to young children,” said Pittman. “Reading gives them the knowledge to express themselves, and even boost their attention span and memory retention.”
