MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. -- Family members, friends and fellow service members gathered to honor the life of Capt. Ericsson Davis during a memorial service held at the Marine Corps Air Station New River Chapel, June 20. Davis was killed in a private plane crash in Chester, S.C.
During the service, fellow Marines attested to the character, loyalty and sense of adventure Davis consistently displayed.
“Through my interactions with him, I knew he was an individual I would enjoy working with,” said Lt. Col. Colin Brainard, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron VMM-264 commanding officer. “Ericsson easily stood out, even among the high caliber individuals I work with. I wish I had more time with him. Describing him as a fascinating person is a complete understatement.”
Davis also set a stellar example for peers and those under him, said Capt. Gabe Glinsky, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 instructor.
“He lived his life to the fullest,” said Glinsky. “Seeing how he did things made me want to be a better Marine, officer and pilot.”
Davis attended Virginia Military Institute, where he graduated with honors in 2010 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering and a minor in Arabic.
Upon graduating, he received his commission as a Marine officer.
Davis completed flight school in June 2013 and was selected for Commodore’s List with distinction from Training Squadron 35.
Following flight school, Davis reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotot Squpadron-204 for Fleet Replacement Squadron training in the MV-22 Osprey.
He was then assigned to VMM-264, the Black Knights, where he held the billet of squadron adjutant.
Davis was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain in May.
Davis’s mother, retired Air Force Col. Marjorie Davis, was the final speaker at the memorial, encouraging those in attendance to learn from the life of her son.
“I hope Ericsson’s life inspires you to not get comfortable with your own life,” she said. “Learn new things and throughout that, learn more about yourself.”
