Kidd Sailors interact with Hong Kong elderly

HONG KONG – Sailors assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG 100) visited Hong Kong’s Helping Hand Elderly Center June 19 to meet and interact with the residents.

The trip was a community service (COMSERV) project during the ship’s port visit to Hong Kong with the George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GWCSG).

During their time at the elderly center, the volunteers from the crew toured the facility and spent time meeting and playing games with the residents.

“We are so grateful that these Sailors took the time to come out to our facility and brighten up our resident’s day,” said Chris Lee, the home’s supervisor. “They look forward to anyone who visits and they are especially excited to meet the crew and hear their stories.”

After touring the facility, the crew performed drill movements and shared photos from their current deployment.

“I had a blast showing these people what we do out at sea,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Ashley Norman. “Seeing the reaction on their faces from the photos of my job was awesome, and made me feel proud of what I do.”

The crew finished their visit by practicing traditional Tai Chi meditation with the residents.

“The stretching and movements we performed were surprisingly relaxing,” said Norman. “I’m so glad they showed us something unique that they do. It was really fun!”

COMSERV projects are a valuable chance for Kidd Sailors to give back and learn about the people and culture they are visiting.

Kidd, homeported in San Diego, is currently on patrol with GWCSG in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting regional security and stability in the Indo-Asia Pacific region.
