    RUKLA, Lithuania – Paratroopers from 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, participated in the closing ceremony for Exercise Saber Strike 2014 here June 18.

    The ceremony marked the completion of a weeklong training exercise between U.S., Lithuanian, Danish and Polish forces who conducted offensive, defensive and stability operations.

    During the exercise, paratroopers from the 173rd conducted resupply missions with Lithuanian forces, force-on-force training against Danish troops, airborne operations with both Lithuanian and Danish paratroopers and familiarization of each other’s weapons and tactical vehicles.

    The final part of the exercise consisted of a distinguished visitor day where each of the allied forces displayed their capabilities for such visitors as the President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite, and Maj. Gen. Mark McQueen, deputy chief of staff, U.S. Army Europe.

    Over the course of the exercise, Saber Strike 2014 received many distinguished guests to include Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell Jr., commanding general of U.S. Army Europe; Maj. Gen. Wesley Craig, adjutant general of the Pennsylvania National Guard; Brig. Gen. Timothy Hilty, director of the joint staff, Pennsylvania National Guard.

    “The exercise very much facilitated building trust,” said Maj. Gen. Almantas Leika, Lithuanian Land Forces commander. “We proved that we are strong when we stand united.”

    Paratroopers with the 173rd also participated in the opening ceremony for Saber Strike 2014 June 10, and worked alongside NATO forces through the sharing of each other’s training doctrine in military tactics.

    Saber Strike 2014 increased interoperability with regional partners and included approximately 4,500 personnel from 10 different countries. The training exercise long-standing, multilateral, multifaceted, U.S. Army Europe-led security cooperation exercise primarily focused on the three Baltic States.
