JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - A segment of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall’s McNair Road, that has been closed since early May due to surface damage, is being repaired and could be opened in the near future.

“We are diligently working to open the road,” Directorate of Public Works Base Operations and Maintenance Chief Denise Faldowski said during a June 10 interview with the Pentagram.

From Lee Avenue to Marshall Drive, part of McNair Road, which runs adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery’s current Millennium Project expansion and links the Wright Gate area to the rest of the base, has been unavailable to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for over a month.

On May 7, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in coordination with JBM-HH’s Directorate of Public Works closed the stretch of road due to cracked pavement. According to Faldowski, the causes of the buckled road are multifold.

“When there was excavation up toward the road, there were some unsuitable soils in the area which caused the road to start to slip and crack,” Faldowski said. “That was not anticipated; there was no way to know these unforeseen site conditions were in that area.

“The road will be opened when it is feasible and safe,” she added. “DPW and USACE are finalizing all requirements and repairs necessary to allow for the road to reopen.”

Faldowski added heavy rain also played a part in the road closure.

To relieve the problem, an embankment has been built on the south side of McNair and additional drainage features have been added.
