BISMARCK, N.D. - Family members of North Dakota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will host the 7th Annual Military Appreciation Road March Sunday, June 8, to honor and remember all service members killed in action in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT).

The event also will honor all veterans and military members who are currently serving. The nine-mile march begins at the Memorial to the Fallen in the Global War on Terrorism and ends at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

The public is invited to the event to show support for the state's military communities. Parking and registration will be located in the Bank of North Dakota's parking lot with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Vans will follow the group along the Road March route to pick up participants who do not wish to walk the entire distance.

The Road March will begin with a short remembrance ceremony at 9:38 a.m. at the GWOT Memorial, which is located at the front gate of the North Dakota National Guard headquarters at Fraine Barracks in Bismarck. The time of the ceremony coincides with the local Afghanistan time when Sgt. Travis A. Van Zoest, 21, and Cpl. Curtis R. Mehrer, 21, were killed in action on June 6, 2006, when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while on duty in Afghanistan. They were members of the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment - Security Forces (1-188th ADA - SECFOR). Two other Soldiers in the unit also were killed in action while serving in Afghanistan: Cpl. Nathan J. Goodiron, 25, of Mandaree, and Cpl. Christopher K. Kleinwachter, 29, of Wahpeton.

The 1-188th ADA - SECFOR served in Afghanistan from December 2005 until April 2007.

During the Road March, participants will take rest breaks at the McDonalds in Mandan and "The Post," south of Mandan, before heading south on North Dakota Highway 1806 en route to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
