JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. -A member of the Fort Myer Lady Generals varsity basketball team is heading overseas after being selected to the 2014 Armed Forces Women’s Basketball Team.

Syreeta Bromfield earned one of the 12 roster spots and now will travel to Europe for final tune-up practices and the Conseil International Du Sport Militaire tournament in Meyenheim, France, which begins June 15 and runs through June 22.

A total of 21 service members were invited to the basketball tryout/training camp at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, but the group ventured to Fort Belvoir the weekend of May 30 for a string of scrimmages against Washington Area Military Athletic Conference All-Star and club teams. Following five scrimmages and multiple practice sessions, Coach Nate Williams and his staff endeavored to piece together a final roster.

“It was real tough selecting a roster because we had five or six days to decide,” Williams said during a phone interview. “We accelerated [the timeline], and we practiced three times a day.”

Bromfield, a Yeoman Second Class in the Coast Guard, is very familiar with the elite Armed Forces basketball process. She was a member of the 2012 team and was named to the Armed Forces All-Tournament Team. In 2010, she represented the United States at the first CISM tournament in Seoul, South Korea. That same year, she was named the Coast Guard’s elite athlete of the year.

The women’s squad is comprised of seven Army members, two Navy players and two Air Force players. Bromfield is the lone Coast Guard representative.

The newly-comprised team leaves for Baumholder, Germany, June 10 for additional practice time; they are guaranteed to play 10 games during their stay in Europe.
