FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Every year, the Marine Corps invites less than 100 of the best high school football players to participate in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. Steven Moss, a senior at Chancellor High School, was on the list and he accepted.
Moss has been playing football since he was 13 years old, but this was his last game as a high school player. Moss was flown to California along with his mother for the SFAAB, which is one of the largest football events hosted by the Marine Corps earlier this year.
“We absolutely love the Semper Fi Bowl,” said Kim Moss. “It was so professional. It is everything you think of when you think of the Marines.”
Moss and his football peers received an opportunity to be mentored by Marines in the lead up to the bowl.
“It had a lot of character building,” said Moss. “It was tough. It made me mentally tougher. I thought it was cool. It was a lot of fun and just different than a lot of the other bowls I played in.”
To congratulate Moss for his outstanding achievements, the Marines of Recruiting Station Frederick presented a certificate in front of friends and family to Moss to attest to Moss’ participation and hard work.
“Most recruiters never get the opportunity to (present the SFAAB jersey and certificate),” said Sgt. Dennis Catrett, a native of Fredericksburg, Va., and a recruiter with Recruiting Station Frederick. “With the jersey presentation at halftime of the homecoming football game and then the presentation of the certificate during the senior awards, it was good.”
The 6-foot tall offensive guard was an easy pick for the Marine Corps.
“He is a warrior on the field,” said Catrett. “His size, speed and intelligence make him an above average competitor.”
Players were chosen that not only had the skill in the game but also the leadership and drive to see the team to victory.
“Steven would run through the school house wall for us if it meant us scoring a touchdown at the end,” said Bob Oliver, Moss’ high school football coach and the head coach at Chancellor High School. “Steven is a very loyal person and is committed to being the best offensive lineman he possibly can be.”
Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl players embody Marine Corps leadership traits such as dependability, loyalty and enthusiasm. These traits and other intangible factors stand alongside academic success and personal achievements, in choosing players for the SFAAB.
