TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - Gen. John F. Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), arrived today in Honduras.
During his visit, he will meet with members of the Honduran military high command and civil society groups. He and U.S. Ambassador to Honduras Lisa Kubiske will also meet with President Juan Orlando Hernandez and members of the Honduran National Security Council on June 2.
As SOUTHCOM commander, Kelly oversees activities carried out by the U.S. military with defense and security institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
As part of the U.S. Government's comprehensive assistance to Honduras, SOUTHCOM cooperates in combating transnational threats, organized crime and drug trafficking; offers humanitarian assistance projects and training; responds to natural disasters and provides training and assistance to mitigate their effects; and participates in bilateral and multinational exercises with the Honduran military.
Kelly last visited Honduras in February.
