JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The Career Resource Management Center staff on the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall offers a variety of career resources, not only to transitioning service members, but to their families as well.
Part of Marine Corps Community Services at Headquarters and Services Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps Henderson Hall, the center houses specialists and program assistants who oversee the Transition Assistance Management Program and the Family Member Employment Assistance Program.
“Our programs range in topics to benefit not only Marines, but Marine family members as well,” said Stephanie Hechtkopf, TAMP-FMEAP program manager.
Overseeing both the transition assistance and family member employment programs, Hechtkopf said the employment readiness workshops are offered monthly at the center, located at Building 29, 1555 Southgate Road.
Twice a year, the center hosts education and career fairs for both service members and their families. The latest happened this week and included a networking session for military family members with potential employers.
“Members of all services come to the career fairs and the transition workshops” Hechtkopf said.
She added that the program provides another tool for people to use, whether it’s transition and readiness assistance, resume writing, or learning to utilize social media in a job search.
There’s even a new class – marketing your volunteer experience (June 25, from 9-11 a.m., Bldg. 29, Room 103), which helps military spouses translate their volunteer experience to resumes.
“Even though they may not have worked for pay, that experience still has value,” said Victor Johnson, TAMP-FMEAP specialist.
Johnson said there’s also a new workshop: spouse employment orientation, with the first class held July 23, from 1-3 p.m., also in Bldg. 29, Room 103. The class offers information which is particularly helpful for spouses new to the area, he said.
“The advantage of coming here is location, since we’re right here in the National Capital Region and provide a wide range of services,” Hechtkopf added.
The program manager said another resource available is career coaching.
“If spouses are relocating from another area, or reentering the job market and need help with their job search, we offer career coaching,” he said.
Although the program does not offer job placement, Hechtkopf said every possible resource is provided at the center “to help spouses successfully get the job they want.”
Other classes offered include: Cracking the Code to the Federal Hiring Process; Generating Leads and Creating your Job Search Plan, Career Exploration: Finding Your Focus, and Portable Careers: Opportunities and Resources for Military Spouses.
