ZACAPA, Guatemala – Sgt. 1st Class Delmer Horman, HHC 935th Aviation Support Battalion in Missouri, is the food service noncommissioned officer in charge throughout Beyond the Horizon 2014 - Guatemala. Beyond the Horizon is a partnership between the United States and Central and South America and the Caribbean to provide medical, dental, and engineering services to the local communities.
Horman joined the service in 1980 and served 12 years active duty, during which time he was stationed in Germany twice and Korea once. He then joined the Missouri National Guard in 2009. This is Horman’s second Beyond the Horizon mission.
“I like the country. I like meeting new people and I like the new challenges I face,” Horman expressed. “I would tell any soldier to do this. You get to learn about the new culture, and it provides knowledge to pass on. I talk to my grandchild a lot about the local people and differences you see here.”
Horman faces multiple challenges each day while trying to provide for the soldiers. He must keep up with the needs of soldiers at each construction site throughout the entire deployment. Yet for each challenge Horman overcomes, there is a reward.
“Knowing the soldiers have enough to eat and they don’t get sick or run down, especially with the heat, is worthwhile,” Horman reflected. “Also knowing they appreciate the small things I do like getting them fresh fruit or vegetables is satisfying.”
Horman gets to interact with the local people throughout his time here. In doing so, it allows him to teach them new food preparation techniques, like using potato peelers, as well as learning from them.
“I’m trying to teach them easier ways of cooking and they are teaching me that the way they do things follows their ancestral traits,” Horman observed.
“Sgt. 1st Class Horman’s impact on the motivation of the soldiers is immeasurable; however, you can see it in the soldiers when they get to the construction sites and you can see it when they are relaxing eating dinner each night,” commented Col. John Findley, Task Force Oso commander. “He does a great job enhancing the overall Beyond the Horizon experience!”
