GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Marines with Officer Selection Team Gainesville, Recruiting Station Jacksonville, conducted a Marine Corps Leadership brief to a consortium of coaches at the University of Florida May 8, 2014.
The class was part of an ongoing effort to promulgate Marine Corps Leadership principles and officer opportunities, which began at the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association conference in Nashville, Tenn., earlier this year.
“Leadership, that’s the focus here,” said Capt. Sean G. Ramirez the officer selection officer. “The WBCA conference is focused on women in leadership roles. … The Marine Corps is looking for women who want to serve as leaders.”
The brief focused on leadership development an included and Officer Candidate School video presentation, an overview of officer candidate programs and concluded with a dynamic discussion session.
“As basketball coaches, we want leaders in the team,” explained David S. Lowery, the assistant coach for women’s basketball at the University of Florida. “I was really impressed with the Marine Corps leadership classes we received at the WBCA conference. … This is something the head coach and I want our athletes to learn.”
The course initiative proved effective as it sparked the interest in numerous coaches in hosting future Marine Corps Leadership Seminars and physical training sessions for their respective players.
“Thanks to the event hosted by the University of Florida, we were able to create new professional relationships and build on those started at the WBCA conference,” Ramirez concluded. “The coaching staff from various universities had a strong desire for future events to enhance the confidence and leadership of their athletes with the help of the Unites states Marine Corps.”
