MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - TRICARE’S Nurse Advice Line, implemented aboard base May 2, is the new place for members of the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune community to turn for guidance when the first sign of illness or injury strikes.

The Nurse Advice Line provides 24/7 nurse triage, advice and medical treatment facility appointing. Advice line nurses help relieve strain on the emergency room by redirecting non-emergency cases to the correct level of care, and if necessary, refer beneficiaries urgent care facility access.

“The Nurse Advice Line provides interactive, telephonic advice, to aid in decreasing unnecessary emergency room and urgent care visits, as well as, allow beneficiaries to cancel and reschedule appointments,” said Navy Capt. Joe Duane, deputy director of healthcare business at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune.

“Emergency and urgent care is expensive and the advice line decreases the number of unnecessary visits by providing healthcare needs through simple advice and direction,” said Peter Demonch, department head of utilization management at NHCL.

Fewer emergency room visits result in shorter wait times, a more efficient use of resources and staff and less multi-health system costs, Demonch added.

The Nurse Advice Line was tested at six military treatment facilities across the U.S. to evaluate beneficiaries’ reception to it, said Demonch. The advice line was well received at the initial launch locations.

In addition to NHCL, 11 other bases from different services started utilizing the Nurse Advice Line last week.

“We want to provide high-quality care for our patients, and the Nurse Advice Line is another tool we can use to provide care,” said Duane.

The advice line is not a substitute for doctor visits or emergency situations. For healthcare services, contact the Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-874-2273 and select option 1.
