MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Military spouses learned about resources available when transitioning from military to civilian life through Marine Corps Community Services’ Spouse Transition Experience and Preparation Seminar at the Tarawa Terrace Community Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, May 1.
Military spouses learned about resources available when transitioning from military to civilian life through Marine Corps Community Services’ Spouse Transition Experience and Preparation Seminar at the Tarawa Terrace Community Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, May 1.
The seminar provides a panel of experts from different organizations, who educate attendees about a wide range of subjects from education and career assistance to financial management and healthcare.
“We want to let spouses know that there are free resources available on and off base, which help ease the process of transitioning out of the military,” said Lindsay Gress, a transition readiness adviser with Marine Corps Community Services aboard base.
The seminar was inspired by Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s Spouse Transition and Readiness Seminar, said Gress. The event was first opened aboard Camp Lejeune in 2013 after MCCS Lejeune adopted the idea.
“The Transition Readiness Seminar is a classroom environment and provides general information,” said Sherry Anthony, a transition readiness adviser with MCCS. “Spouses want to know how resources directly affect them.”
Spouses have the opportunity to have their specific questions answered during STEPS, Anthony added.
The program is similar to the Transition Readiness Seminar, a five-day class for Marines and families to prepare them to transition from military life to civilian life. While Marines can learn through TRS, their spouses can learn the same information through STEPS.
“Spouses feel more comfortable in an environment with other spouses,” said Bambi Pelham, a transition readiness adviser with MCCS.
Both the service members and spouses walk away equally informed from each seminar, added Pelham.
“It doesn’t matter if your service member is getting out in four years or four months, now is the time to start preparing and learning what resources are out there,” said Gress.
The next STEPS will be held at the base education center, May 14 from 9 to 11 a.m.
