MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s, Officers’ Spouses’ Club hosted the 2014 Officers’ Spouses’ Club Joint Luncheon at Miller’s Landing April 24.

The OSC supports local military spouses and children by offering scholarships and grants for those seeking to further their education and provide financial support for organizations within the local community.

“The Officers’ Spouses’ Clubs are all charitable organizations,” said Heather Howard, an OSC member and the spouse of Lt. Col. Dan Howard, the commanding officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. “All three of the clubs have their different fundraiser events that give back to the community, and that’s really the purpose of all the clubs.”

More than 120 spouses from military installations, like Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, MCAS New River and Cherry Point, joined together to build camaraderie and talk about key issues in the Marine Corps.

“The event builds camaraderie amongst the clubs and aims to celebrate the success of the year,” said Howard. “The event is important because we are all in the same geographic area but we don’t necessarily get to see one another. It provides us with a chance to come together and visit with old friends from different duty stations and celebrate friendship.”

As the spouses were celebrating, they were also discussing servant leadership proposed by this year’s guest of honor, Mrs. Ellyn Dunford, a member of the OSC and the spouse of Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., commanding general of International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces-Afghanistan. Servant leadership highlights the importance of putting the needs of others before your own and helping them develop and perform as highly as possible.

“Servant leadership is taking care of the people around you, making sure that the group as a whole is able to function to its maximum potential or ability,” said Dunford. “Whatever the goal is for the group, it is able to happen because you help to nurture the right environment for those people individually or as a group.”

The luncheon was both a learning experience for the spouses and a time for them to interact with each other.

“The luncheon was great,” said Anne Girod, an OSC member and the spouse of 1st Lt. Jarrod A. Girod, a ground intelligence officer with 2nd Intelligence Battalion. “Just seeing new people and getting to see a person again is one of the fun things about the Marine Corps.”
