CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with 10th Marine Regiment celebrated the regiment’s 100th anniversary with a battle color rededication ceremony April 25, 2014, at the Goettge Field House aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.
More than 400 Marines, sailors and guests watched Col. Clifford J. Weinstein, the commanding officer of 10th Marine Regiment, as he attached battle streamers to the regiment’s colors.
The ceremony was held to honor the founding of the regiment, preserve the history of 10th Marines and to memorialize the regiment’s past through its present Marines and sailors.
“The regiment’s heritage is a result of the courage, sacrifice and humility set forth by those who came before us,” said Col. Clifford J. Weinstein, the commanding officer of 10th Marines. “The men who paid the ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten and we will honor those of the past and present while looking forward to continued success of the regiment and its Marines.”
The 10th Marine Regiment was formed on April 25, 1914 at Vera Cruz, Mexico as an artillery battalion assigned to the 1st Marine Brigade as the first separate artillery unit in the Marine Corps.
Though they never fired a cannon in Mexico, the regiment would have a long and storied future awaiting them.
“Our regiment has a rich history and as one the oldest Marine Corps artillery units, we are proud of our many accomplishments,” said Weinstein.
Tenth Marines has fought and served in many major engagements including Guadalcanal, Tinian, Okinawa and the Middle East.
“From Mexico to the Pacific Islands and atolls, the regiment was there, and in recent years this Regiment has continued to add to its lineage with places like Lebanon, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan,” added Weinstein. “No other artillery regiment in the Marine Corps can claim such history.”
Since established 1914, 10th Marine Regiment has had 85 commanding officers and 36 sergeants major, and today sits at two battalions and nine batteries.
“Our history and list of accomplishments in performing our mission is lengthy,” said Weinstein. “Today marks the Regiment’s 100th anniversary and with the unpredictability and impulsiveness of the world, we persevere to be the best prepared to provide that critical close-in, timely, precision fire support in the future.
