CORONADO, Calif. – Service members, families, and friends celebrated the annual Earth Day on April 22 at the Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) Navy Exchange (NEX) to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day, which began in 1970, is now celebrated in more than 190 countries worldwide.
Naval Base Coronado (NBC) hosted an information exposé, reusable bag giveaway, and cake-cutting ceremony at the NASNI NEX with information booths provided by Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest Environmental, Natural Resources, Recycling, Energy Conservation, and the Regional Transportation Incentive Program (TIP). The event served to teach patrons about the base’s environmental programs, but also to facilitate conversation about environmental stewardship within the local community.
“We have largest number of personnel enrolled in the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and van pools, and we are committed to growing the program to reduce our carbon foot print within the community. Today is just the beginning of our future marketing plan to educate Sailors on alternative transportation opportunities,” said Bruce Shaffer, NBC Community Plans Liaison.
NBC has over 1500 employees enrolled in the TIP bus/rail program, over 700 van pool riders, and 130 ferry riders.
In addition, the NASNI Child Development Center (CDC) held a special gardening event. NBC Commanding Officer, Capt. Christopher Sund, and NBC Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Director, Wendy Borja, planted seeds and vegetables alongside preschool children at the 24/7 CDC. Although the concept of sustainability is above their understanding, the children can grasp simple truths about caring for the environment through their community garden. They share the responsibility of watering the plants and will enjoy eating the fresh vegetables when ready for harvest.
“Naval Base Coronado has a responsibility to promote environmental stewardship. Today's event educated hundreds of Sailors and their families on the base's environmental programs and provided ways to take local action within our community. We all need to understand that our actions have impacts on the environment and our positive actions can promote and even increase mission readiness,” said Sund.
