CHERRY POINT, N.C. - A step up from last year, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron won the annual field meet against Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., April 18, 2014.
H&HS’s top leadership won the trophy during a tie-breaking relay race between the squadrons’ commanding and executive officers and sergeants major.
More than 200 Marines of all ranks from the squadrons participated in 11 separate events, including soccer and volleyball matches, tug-of-war and a 7-ton truck pull.
The Cherry Point squadrons started the competition in 2004, and despite multiple deployments in support of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and II Marine Expeditionary Force, they have kept the tradition alive.
“The field meet is for members of the wing units to have a little fun and build camaraderie,” said Master Sgt. John B. Francis, one of the event coordinators for the games.
During the games, the Marines depended on one another and worked together to accomplish a common goal.
“Both units get to cheer for their Marines and share both the victory and defeat. That’s what builds camaraderie and unit cohesion within the squadrons,” said Francis.
In the end, the Marines and Sailors of H&HS edged out the Marines and Sailors of MWHS-2, winning the overall meet, 13-12.
