    124th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

    MARIETTA, Ga. - Marietta’s own Army National Guard Detachment 9 Operational Airlift Command, 78th Aviation Troop Command arrived back home at Clay National Guard Center from their year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

    The detachment touched down shortly after 8 p.m., April 11, 2014 to friends and families eager for their return.

    Their mission was to provide VIP transport from Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan to other bases in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirate, and other locations in support of senior leader movement.

    During their 11-month deployment, the unit flew more than 520 combat missions, including 1,150 accident-free combat flight hours. The unit used their Fairchild C-26 Metroliner to transport more than 2,000 passengers and 54,000 pounds of equipment and supplies throughout their battle space.

    This was the detachments second deployment to Afghanistan.

    Detachment 9 aviators are among the nearly 400 Georgia Guardsmen supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. More than 11,000 Georgia Army National Guardsmen have deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan since the start of the global war on terrorism.
