GULFPORT, Miss. - With only a few items remaining, members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74 Detail (DET) SOCAFRICA: Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti (CLDJ) have been charging hard and are in the final stages of constructing of a facility being built to contain communication equipment.

Working long hours, they applied self-leveling compound to smooth and even out floors, placed tile throughout the building, installed baseboard trim along with nine A/C units, repainted the entire interior, and performed some electrical work. Next, the Seabees look to run 3,000 feet of electrical wire for main power hookup, bringing them one step closer to completing the transformation of this Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) to allow it to be turned over to its new owners. They have all of the tools and materials needed to put the finishing touches on the project and plan to have it complete by the end of March.

“The completion of this project will greatly increase the customer’s ability to conduct their necessary operations,” said Builder 1st Class Ryan Laney, DET project manager. “The pride and motivation of the crew was exceptional in all phases of construction, and they showed through their work ethic, and technical knowledge, how we operate as Seabees.”

This project is only one of many for the Seabees of DET SOCAF as, upon its completion, they will continue to work throughout the region in support of other units. As an example of such, two construction electricians from 74 will soon deploy to Central Africa. Following up on a previous site assessment performed by Seabees from NMCB 11, the members of 74 will receive previously ordered construction material and perform associated repairs.

As the days go by, the crew is more than ready to execute these missions “down range,” and they look forward to experiencing new places and cultures.

With its home-port in Gulfport, Miss., NMCB 74 is a 580-person Seabee battalion currently deployed to multiple locations in U.S. Northern Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility, providing general and contingency engineering support to Combatant and Component Commanders in order to enhance their operational capabilities across the full spectrum of military operations. Operating forward, NMCB 74 strives to capitalize on engagement opportunities and build lasting relationships, ultimately paving the way for future partnerships.
