    MAHMUDIYAH, Iraq — Coalition troops responded to a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonation on an Iraqi highway outside Mahmudiyah, Iraq, Sept. 9.

    A local resident was killed in the explosion and another six were injured, including the driver of the explosives-laden car.

    Soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), out of Fort Drum, N.Y., heard the explosion from their post at Forward
    Operating Base Mahmudiyah and went to the site of the detonation.

    The dead and wounded were taken to the aid station at FOB Mahmudiyah and four were taken by aerial medical evacuation to the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad's International Zone.

    An explosive ordinance disposal team examined the damaged car, which was found to have contained about 15 pounds of bulk explosives.

    The incident is under investigation.
