MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Marines and sailors at Cherry Point work hard to support the mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. For some Marines, service extends beyond day-to-day duties.

Corporal Alexander Kuhn, an intermediate aviation ordnance technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14, ordinarily keeps 2nd MAW aircraft weapon systems maintained and ready for flight operations.

“I assist with providing aircrews with support for their ammunition systems,” said Kuhn. “I help maintain them and perform all the required maintenance on them to make sure they are ready for use.”

Aside from his regular duties, Kuhn volunteers in the local community, an extension of his community involvement before joining the Marine Corps in 2009.

“I was a Boy Scout until I turned 18 and that’s really what got me started,” said Kuhn. “Right now I’m a member of the Havelock Moose Lodge and Family Center. I volunteer in their kitchen and I help with their weekly bingo.”

Kuhn recently earned recognition for his volunteer efforts assisting the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s 2013 convention.

Major General Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd MAW, recognized Kuhn Tuesday with a Meritorious Mast for his efforts during the society’s convention. Kuhn excelled as part of a security detail responsible for escorting several VIPs, including former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former commandant of the Marine Corps James Conway.

“I feel honored because I wasn’t expecting anything for volunteering,” said Kuhn.
