EAST CHINA SEA – Marines attached to 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Company F and Weapons Company conducted a live-fire exercise on the flight deck of Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Denver (LPD 9) March 19.
According to Marine Cpl. Randall Bowker from 31st MEU, this is the first live-fire drill they conducted aboard Denver this deployment. When not embarked, the Marines conduct live-fire exercises frequently.
“This exercise keeps our motion skills fresh,” said Bowker. “We practice and execute a lot of turning maneuvers and drills for potential targets to either side and behind us.”
Marines conducted the exercise by firing at targets from 20 yards out and closer using M4 and M16 rifles, along with M9 pistols.
“This is close quarters target training. You want to practice with a target 20 yards in front of you so when you have to use this training in the field, you will be better prepared,” said Bowker.
Denver, the Navy’s oldest deployable warship, is assigned to the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group and is conducting operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
