YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – Yongsan Child Youth and School Services hosted an Art Exhibition at the Dragon Hill Lodge for the community members to view the artwork and enjoy a buffet, Feb 21.
Each year, American young people from around the world create artwork to compete in the Boys and Girls Club of America Fine Arts Exhibition. These pieces of art are displayed and evaluated at the various international BGCA Clubs. Once judged, the artwork moves on to regional exhibition at selected clubs in different host nations.
The selections showcased for this event will move forward to BGCA Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia to be exhibited and compete in the National Level BGCA Fine Arts Exhibition. The judging takes place from May to June 2014, and the winners are announced in July.
Joseph Jacks, Yongsan CYSS middle school and team program director, explained some details about the local exhibit.
“Tonight’s event is a Boys and Girls Club of America Regional fine arts exhibition. We are showcasing and featuring all the winners from ten different categories including monochromatic, watercolors and pencil,” Jacks said. “Some are the local winners from Yongsan, whom are very fortunate to be here tonight. But some of the artists are in Japan and Singapore, so they couldn’t attend for travel reasons. So we send them gift certificates to show that they are being recognized.”
A parent of one of the featured artists said her daughter is very excited to be able to be there and have her creative work displayed.
“We would not have found out about her art skills at home. This event helped us see and identify that she has some skills in that area and hopefully she’ll continue to pursue them,” said Dean Moore, Career program specialist for CCK. All the artwork here are fantastic, there are some really good displays, really fine work, that has been put together by the kids. I attended the first one they held last year. It was nice then and very satisfying again tonight.”
This year, more than 80 pieces of artwork were submitted from South Korea (USAG Yongsan, USAG Daegu, USAG Humphreys and Osan Air Base), Japan (Marine Corps Air Station—Iwakuni and Camp Zama, Kadena Air Base) and Singapore (Singapore Naval Support Activity).
