WAEGWAN, South Korea – Forty soldiers from the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, went to the Camp Carroll range to qualify for the basic rifle marksmanship Oct. 16.
BRM is a fundamental requirement that all soldiers need to be qualified for. A soldier must be able to fight as a certified rifleman before going into combat.
This semiannual M16 range qualification brought Team 19 together with HHC encouraging the firers at the range. Capt. Peter C. Mueller, HHC, 19th ESC commander, and 1st Sgt. Danny Morales, HHC 19th ESC first sergeant, also showed up on the range strongly motivating the soldiers to perform their best.
“Leaders of the 19th ESC are more involved in preparing for basic trainings like the range today,” said Sgt. 1st Class Bobby G. Ingram, 19th ESC Support Operations Training noncommissioned officer. “We conducted in process reviews [IPRS], rock drills and other preparations for the range.”
The soldiers had different feelings about completing the M16 range qualification. There were a few nervous soldiers although most of them were confident that they would be successful in qualifying the BRM.
“Before shooting, I felt mediocre and was afraid. I was not sure that I could do better than before when I shot 26 out of 40,” said Pvt. Joshua L. Harris, 19th ESC G6 cable and installer maintainer.
However, all candidates successfully qualified on the M16 BRM with no one falling behind. As a unified team, the soldiers gained a sense of pride infusing confidence to fellow firers as their results showed up to be impressive.
“I am very satisfied with my results,” added Harris. “I scored 32 out of 40, which is an improvement from my previous range qualification. I am proud of my accomplishment and confident that I can do better next time.”
Safety is a critical part of the M16 qualification range which requires meticulous and systematic preparation. A successful marksmanship includes soldiers being knowledgeable about the safety measures. While scoring well for the BRM may be important for most soldiers, safety is undoubtedly the most significant aspect that soldiers must bear in mind.
“Soldiers should be educated and be familiarized with the weapons they are using,” said Staff Sgt. Brett L. Hartley, G1 plans noncommissioned officer. “They should make sure the weapons they are using are cleaned and the magazines are pulled out for safety.”
The 19th ESC is an immense unit with numerous soldiers possessing various specialties. Before their military professions, soldiers should be prepared to defend and guard the nation. The19th ESC soldiers are ready to fight tonight.
